Libido & DHEA
12/12/2023

One of the common questions we get asked is what will help with lowered libido in menopause - and it can be tricky to answer, because libido is more complicated than just a little blue pill - however, DHEA looks to be a promising solution for women.

"Research indicates that androgens are related to sexual desire in women also (Bancroft & Graham, 2011). If all sources of androgens (the adrenals and the ovaries) are removed, women lose sexual desire. Women who have undergone oophorectomy (surgical removal of the ovaries, typically because of cancer) report marked decreases in sexual desire. If they are treated with testosterone, their sexual desire increases (Shifren et al., 1998, 2000). Moreover, androgens are used successfully in the treatment of women who have low sexual desire (Kaplan & Owett, 1993). Androgen levels decline with age in women, and research shows that administration of DHEA (a pretestosterone hormone) to women over 60 results in their having increased sexual desire (Baulieu et al., 2000; Spark, 2002)."

As research into women's health grows, there appears to be a link between adrenal insufficiency and how DHEA supplementation can help; this study was a literature review, and highlighted the different ways in which DHEA is used in post menopause to help with both wellbeing and libido.
