Understanding Vaginal Atrophy: What's Often Missing from the Conversation
07/28/2023

Also known as Vulvovaginal Atrophy (VVA) or Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), many women experience a range of changes in vaginal and vulvar comfort — including dryness, itching, and discomfort. The most challenging part is that women often don't know much about these changes or what to look out for. This large study helps highlight how little support and awareness women in this space actually receive.

Summary

This study was large, with over 3000 participants responding to the questions. Researchers were trying to get a clearer picture of vaginal dryness and discomfort in post-menopausal women, and why so many women weren't finding adequate support or awareness. The researchers noted that, "Significant barriers to finding support include limited awareness of vaginal dryness and discomfort, reluctance to discuss these concerns openly, and inadequate relief from available options." This suggests that the pervasive nature of 'not talking about this kind of thing' affects us as individuals, as well as the medical industry as a whole. Furthermore, a lot of the options can be challenging — certain prescription hormone options carry real considerations, while others, like vaginal moisturizers, aren't really effective at providing lasting comfort.
