We talk about self care a lot... but what exactly is self care?

Let's take a look at research into self care, and get a better understanding of how we can take care of ourselves, why we need to, - and some good ways to do it!

In their 2019 article, Lisa D. Butler and colleagues propose a comprehensive framework for self-care encompassing six interconnected domains.

The Six Domains

Physical: Involves maintaining bodily health through activities like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and routine medical care.

Professional: Focuses on creating a sustainable work-life balance, setting boundaries, and engaging in activities that promote career satisfaction and prevent burnout.

Relational: Emphasizes nurturing supportive relationships and social connections that contribute to emotional well-being.

Emotional: Entails recognizing, understanding, and managing one's emotions through practices like mindfulness, therapy, or journaling.

Psychological: Involves engaging in activities that stimulate the mind, such as learning new skills, problem-solving, and self-reflection.

Spiritual: Pertains to finding meaning and purpose in life, which may include religious practices, meditation, or connecting with nature.

The authors argue that self-care is not a one-size-fits-all approach but requires individualized strategies tailored to each person's unique needs and circumstances. They also highlight the importance of developing both maintenance and emergency self-care plans to effectively manage stress and enhance overall well-being.

Self Care Strategies Backed by Science

Building upon the six domains outlined by Butler et al., here are some evidence-based self-care practices:
