Progestin v Progesterone
05/21/2025

Progesterone and Progestin are two different types of Protestogens. Dr.Robyn Kutka explains the what they do and how they affect our bodies in various ways.

Progesterone and progestin might sound similar, but they’re not the same thing. Progesterone is the natural hormone your body makes (especially after ovulation) that helps regulate your cycle, support pregnancy, and keep things calm and balanced in the brain, bones, and beyond. Progestins, on the other hand, are synthetic versions made in labs to mimic some effects of progesterone — but they’re not identical, and they can act differently in the body. While both bind to progesterone receptors, progestins can also interact with other hormone receptors, leading to more side effects (like mood swings or increased clot risk) that natural progesterone usually doesn’t cause.
