Progesterone and Anxiety

Dr. Robyn Kutka talks about the benefits of progesterone during perimenopause and menopause, specifically how it can help to lower your anxiety.

Progesterone can help reduce anxiety through its direct effects on the brain. Once in the body, progesterone is converted into allopregnanolone, a neurosteroid that interacts with GABA-A receptors—the same calming receptors targeted by anti-anxiety medications like benzodiazepines. This interaction enhances the soothing effects of GABA, the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, helping to calm neural activity, reduce emotional reactivity, and promote a sense of relaxation. Research shows that fluctuations or deficiencies in progesterone, especially during perimenopause or the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, can lead to increased anxiety, insomnia, and irritability—making balanced progesterone levels crucial for mood regulation.
