Movement and Mental Clarity in Midlife
09/04/2024

Brain fog might be a symptom of menopause, but cognitive decline is also associated with aging in general. We know that exercise is great for heart health, for lung health, for bone density, and mobility, and even gut health... but what about our brains? Read on to learn the science that links brain health and busting a move!

Brain fog can be a frustrating part of midlife — and the good news is that researchers are increasingly interested in what everyday habits might do for long-term mental sharpness. Exercise is already well-regarded for heart health, bone strength, and mobility. But what does the research say about movement and the brain?

Emerging findings from health neuroscience suggest that staying active may support cognitive well-being and overall mental sharpness as we age. One review of multiple studies found that people who exercised regularly were observed to maintain stronger cognitive function over a six-year period compared to those who were less active — independent of other factors studied. Along similar lines, regular walking was associated with markers of brain health in a long-term observational study. Researchers point to several factors that may support overall brain and body wellness with regular movement.

The science is encouraging: moving your body consistently is one of the most accessible things you can do for your overall well-being — brain included.
