01/07/2025

According to the survey, while 65% of clinicians offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for mood symptoms, 99% acknowledged that its provision is inadequate. A large portion (43%) felt over half their patients with mood concerns would benefit from psychological support, yet 80% lack access to a dedicated mental health practitioner.

This lack of support is further highlighted by the fact that only 35% of specialists refer complex cases to secondary mental health services. When asked about desired resources, the overwhelming majority (83%) called for better access to CBT, followed by psychological support within menopause clinics (65%), guidance on managing mood concerns (53%), and multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics (39%). These findings point to the value of broader emotional and psychological support for women during the menopause transition.

The researchers concluded that broader psychological support could meaningfully benefit women during the menopause transition, and proposed expanded access to mental health services as a next step.
