Migraines in Menopause
05/21/2025

We had a great question during our Ask Dr.Robyn show about the connection between migraines and estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause.

Migraines can get worse during menopause because of the rollercoaster of fluctuating estrogen levels. Estrogen plays a key role in regulating brain chemicals like serotonin and affects blood vessels—both of which are tied to migraine activity. During perimenopause, estrogen can spike and crash unpredictably, which can trigger more frequent or severe migraines, especially in women who are already hormone-sensitive. Once menopause fully hits and hormone levels stabilize at lower levels, migraines often improve—but that rocky transition phase can be a headache in more ways than one.
