Menopause and the Skin: What Cosmeceuticals Can Do for Aging Skin
01/07/2025

After menopause, estrogen levels often decline significantly, which can be associated with changes in how skin looks and feels — including dryness, visible lines, and a loss of that plump, supple quality. What's going on? When estrogen decreases, so does collagen production, along with the skin's natural cushion and softness.

Research points to estrogen receptors in the skin as part of what gives skin its texture and resilience — and as estrogen levels shift during menopause, so can the way skin looks and feels.

This study reviewed a wealth of past and ongoing research and found that topical estriol is associated with skin that looks more hydrated and youthful in postmenopausal women — when accounting for factors such as race, smoking history, and sun exposure. The researchers also noted that estrogen has historically attracted concern due to the systemic effects linked to estradiol or equilin (horse urine-derived) estrogens. However, the research found that low-dose estriol formulations were associated with skin that appeared more hydrated and showed visible signs of improved texture in menopausal women.
