Estriol Research and Bone Wellness
11/14/2023

Hormonal changes during menopause affect many systems in the body — including bone health. Researchers have been studying how estriol, a naturally occurring estrogen, may relate to bone cell activity in postmenopausal women. Here's a look at what one study found, and why the science is worth knowing.

This study looks at estriol's relationship to bone cell activity in postmenopausal women. To understand the research, it helps to know what osteoblastic proliferation means: it is the multiplication or reproduction of osteoblasts, which are bone-forming cells that secrete an extracellular matrix. Osteoblastic proliferation is, in a nutshell, the growth of bone cells.

The study found that "estriol has been associated with osteoblastic activity, which researchers are studying in the context of postmenopausal well-being." Some research suggests estriol may play a role in bone cell activity — an area researchers continue to explore.
