DHEA & Bone Health
10/17/2024

When it comes to DHEA use, it can be confusing for women to know whether DHEA is a good option for them - research has been limited, and DHEA as a precursor hormone changes into other hormones (namely, testosterone, estradiol, and estriol) meaning it does not behave the same way in everyone. However, this research suggests that there is clear clinical evidence for two groups: those with low circulating DHEA, and those with osteoporosis.

DHEA is what's known as a precursor hormone — your adrenals and ovaries produce it, and from there your body uses it to make androgens and estrogens, the sex hormones that do a lot of work across many body systems. What makes DHEA interesting (and occasionally confusing) is how it moves through the body: unlike estriol, which stays as estriol, DHEA is metabolized by enzymes and converted into different hormones depending on what your body needs. That variability is part of why the research can be complex to interpret.

This particular paper is a research review — meaning the authors pooled studies from 2001 through to the time of publication to map what the science says about DHEA and a range of health areas. Among their findings, the review identified two groups for whom the research on DHEA appeared most relevant: those with lower circulating levels of DHEA, and those with an interest in supporting long-term bone health and overall vitality.

It's a genuinely useful read if you want to understand where the science currently stands on DHEA. Check out the full review here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1258/175404507780796370
