Hormones From Puberty to Post Menopause
04/24/2025

Menopause can mean a lot of things - more free time, more travel, less condoms, and a few grumbling grandbabies to take care of…

But, where are you in this mix?

This article is for educational and general wellness purposes only. It is not medical advice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If you are noticing changes in your body or have questions about your health, please consult a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

Does it sometimes feel like between perimenopause and now, 'you' went on vacation and didn't return?

We get it. One of the things we hear from women all the time is, "I just don't feel like myself anymore."

And honestly, it's a pretty miserable feeling. Between hot flashes, brain fog, body changes, no sleep, and fatigue, it can feel like we've lost the ✨ sparkle ✨ that makes us unique.

The culprit? Yep. Hormones.

Let's take a little look at your hormone story… Once upon a time, deep inside every woman, there was a trio of hormonal divas—Estrogen, Progesterone, and DHEA—running the show.

Act One: Puberty

Estrogen, the drama queen, arrived first, flipping the switch on hips, boobs, and mood swings. Sometimes she overdid it, sometimes she vanished, but she always made a statement.

Progesterone, her mellow counterpart, showed up a little later, trying to calm things down, smoothing out cycles, and keeping emotions from going "full rollercoaster".

DHEA helped with energy and confidence, whispering, "Let's turn this girl into a woman."

Act Two: The Reproductive Years

Estrogen and Progesterone settled into a rhythm, hosting a monthly spectacle called The Menstrual Cycle 🩸.

Estrogen strutted in first, making skin glow, hair shine, and libido skyrocket. Progesterone followed with, "Let's keep things balanced," while also occasionally causing bloating and a sudden desire to cry at dog commercials.

DHEA kept the energy levels strong, helping with muscle tone, mood, and a general get-shit-done attitude.

Act Three: Perimenopause

Around our 40s, Progesterone, always the peacemaker, began backing out of the job, leading to irregular cycles and nights spent staring at the ceiling.

Then, estrogen started getting moody. Some days, she flooded the system, making everything too much — too hot, too emotional, too bloated. Other days, she ghosted entirely, leaving skin dry, energy low, and patience nonexistent.

Meanwhile, DHEA started packing her bags (to leave on the trip she's been planning since age 30!), taking confidence, stamina, and metabolism with her. It was, to put it mildly, a mess.

Act Four: Menopause

By the early 50s, Estrogen had mostly retired, popping in occasionally but never staying long.

Progesterone had left the group completely, no longer smoothing out moods or sleep.

DHEA, exhausted from decades of work, had slowed to a crawl. The result? Fatigue, no motivation, and a sudden realization that caffeine is a lifeline. ☕

Sometime between Act Three and Act Four, a little part of you packed her bags, too — because who wants to deal with feeling crappy 100% of the time?

Here's the thing: understanding your hormone story is the first step toward writing the next chapter on your own terms. You don't have to just white-knuckle your way through Act Four. Talk to a knowledgeable provider, lean on the Sexy Sassy Sisterhood, and know that you are absolutely not alone in this.

Act Four deserves to be amazing — and so do you. 💃✨
