We've covered the increased likelihood of osteoporosis in menopause - an annoying health effect due to declining hormones, in other scientific research, but what about prevention? Whilst there is a lot of advice circulating on how to prevent this bone loss through diet and exercise (both are great!), there is also supplementation. Most people think of calcium and other collagen and cartilage based supplements, but studies suggest that hormone supplementation - and specifically estriol - may hold important keys to reducing bone loss in menopausal women.
This study examined the mechanism behind why estriol is effective at preventing and slowing the rate of bone loss in postmenopausal women. To understand this research, you have to understand what osteoblastic proliferation is; it is the multiplication or reproduction of osteoblasts, resulting in the expansion of an osteoblast cell population. An osteoblast is a bone-forming cell which secretes an extracellular matrix. Thus, osteoblastic proliferation is, in a nutshell, the growth of bone cells. Estriol, as shown by the study, "These results suggest that estriol has an effect on osteoblastic proliferation, and this may contribute to its actions on prevention of bone loss." This means that estriol can, in fact, increase new bone growth, thus helping reduce bone loss!
